Visualizing

In Literacy the preps have been focusing on Visualization. Visualizing is very important because:

1. It makes reading more fun.

2. It helps you to monitor if you’re understanding what you are reading,

3. It improves your comprehension. Good readers use this strategy.

When I am reading, my favorite part is visualizing. When I was young my dad used to tell me stories at night to help me fall to sleep. I couldn’t see any pictures or words, so I had to use my imagination. I would close my eyes and see the main characters doing whatever he said, just like in a movie.

One activity that they did was listening to a section of the book, “Where the Wild Thing Are” and to draw what they visualized. As you can see, each child’s picture is different as we all visualize things differently and there is never a wrong or right answer. The preps were asked to close their eyes and form pictures in their heads of what they see as a passage was being read to them.

Farm Animal Dioramas

The preps have had such a busy term learning about the Farm. As a culmination of their learning they were asked to create a diorama about a farm animal of their choice.

Don’t they all look amazing!!!!

Which farm animal is your favourite?

Bundoora Farm Excursion

Last Wednesday the preps visited Bundoora Farm where they were able to experience what life was like living on  farm.

Some of the day’s highlights included-making scones/grinding wheat/beating cream, pony rides, feeding the animals, milking a goat, tour of the farm where we saw kangaroos and emus and of course eating the yummy scones we made with jam and cream.

We hope you like our photos below-

Chicken hatching program

This term the preps have been lucky enough to have chicks hatching as part of our Integrated Program- ‘On the Farm’. The eggs arrived and so did 2 little chicks.
The preps watched and recorded daily the changes they could see, the lifecycle of a chicken and recorded the stages and learnt what chicks need to survive-food, water and shelter. Their enthusiasm with looking after the chicks after they hatched was amazing. The incubator which housed the eggs and the hutch were all supplied and constantly looked at by prep children, all other children in the school and parents.  What a great experience for our preps!

Book Week

LITERACY is being celebrated throughout the whole school. There were a range of whole school literacy activities organised for this week so we could celebrate and share LITERACY TOGETHER!

We kicked off our week with a WHOLE SCHOOL DRESS UP PARADE where children came dressed as their favourite book character.

As Dr Seuss said:

Here are some photos of some of the preps dressed as their favourite book character!

Hefting

Hefting is holding objects to judge weight. It is using informal objects to estimate or test the weight of something by holding or lifting it. Look at this example below.

EXAMPLE: heft, hefting

The preps investigated hefting many classroom objects by using their hands to work out or judge which was item was heavier and which was lighter. Such items included: scissors, glue sticks, pencils, sharpeners, textas, sand, books and so on.

We decided it would be a great idea for preps to make their own ‘scale’ so using a wire coat hanger, 2 plastic cups and some string we made a balancing scale. You can see from the photos below that the preps loved experimenting with weighing different objects.

Book Week

The characters from our favourite stories came alive at GK! We saw a range of book characters from old classics, right up to the books we are enjoying today. One of our favourite quotes from Dr Seuss:

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Dr Seuss.

What book did you read today?

St Helena Pre School Visit

Yesterday the 4 year old kinder kids from St Helena Preschool came over to visit the preps. We started with the story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. Then the preps worked with the kinder kids to colour, cut and stick icypole sticks to make puppets. We then listened to the story on the smartboard and acted it out using our puppets.
The children then sat together, had a chat and got to know eachother and then ate their brainfood.
We then sang some songs and did some really cool dance moves!
The kinder kids had a play on the prep playground before heading back to their kinder.

Next Thursday 7th August the second 4 year old group will be coming over for a visit.

Here is the story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’.

We are 100 days smarter!

free glitter text and family website at FamilyLobby.comToday the preps celebrated being at primary school for 100 days! Each child made an ‘I am 100 days smarter’ hat with 10 strips on coloured paper which they then added 10 objects onto each strip so that in total they had 100 items.
In class we also counted to 100 by 10’s and ones and made groups of 10 objects.
In the afternoon, the children all brought along a plate of food to share with their classmates.
As part of our celebrartions the children had ‘Homework’ where they were provided with a zip lock bag and had to fill it with 100 of ‘something.’ You can see by these photos that the preps (and their parents) were very creative with items including rice grains, cereal, balloons, paperclips, sultanas and much more. The children discussed how different each zip lock bag looked even when there was the same amount in each.

To end our celebrations the preps were presented with a certificate.
We had soooo much fun and are looking forward to our next 100 days!
